ABOUT US
WOODY CREEK CELLARS HISTORY:
Woody Creek Cellars, located in Woody Creek, Colorado, was founded in 2000 by Winemaker Kevin Doyle.
Woody Creek Cellars is dedicated to making fine natural wines with Old World methods* (see: Winemaking) using only Colordo's finest natural ingredients. We focus on small lot production and high quality.
Guided by an ethos of simplicity, Woody Creek Cellars handmade wines are made with primitive equipment. Our wines are chemical-free, gravity flown, unfiltered, and aged in French oak barrels.
Woody Creek Cellars wines are a benchmark for Colorado wines focusing on good quality and a great price.
* Old World methods include: no chemicals, handpicked grapes, punched down, cold masseration, gravity flow.
WINEMAKER, KEVIN DOYLE:
Kevin Doyle got into winemaking out of desperation, not inspiration. Waiting tables at such Aspen restaurants as The Mother Lode, Poppie's and Krabloonik, the Southern California native had more than a passing familiarity with wine. But after two decades of working for tips, he began thinking there was some bigger mark he could leave on the world.
Not only did Doyle know wine, but he also saw it as a niche where bigger wasn't necessarily better.
In 1998, Doyle began a two-year apprenticeship with Steve Rhodes, who has been making wines for 20 years. Doyle refers to Rhodes as a renegade, and also as Colorado's best winemaker.
Doyle and Woody Creek Cellars had their first crush in 2000.
Doyle makes his wines in an old apple-packing shed in Orchard City, a spot near Delta. His relatively tiny 1,000 cases of annual output is made with primitive equipment and Old World methods. He is guided by an ethos of simplicity that has been mostly washed away by the scientific, mass-production model.
